Michael Wilder: Oldest son of James and Mary Wilder and as an angel, is possibly the biblical Michael, though he won't accept that. He is also a High Prince of their ancestral home of Void. Michael is friendly and funny but underneath is a grim, serious angel who can be coldhearted and deadly. A look into his intent, slightly insane eyes tells you this.  But that is the price of being who he is.  Michael is the lead singer and guitarist in the band "Heavensent". He also is working on a music degree and taking operatic training to help his singing. As with all of the Wilders, Michael was raised in the Catholic religion but unlike the rest of the family, considers himself to be agnostic.

Daniel Wilder: Second son and youngest boy of James and Mary Wilder.  As deadly and serious as Michael is, Daniel is his polar opposite. Good-humored, intelligent, sensitive and musical Daniel is the backbone of their band "Heavensent" and writes most of their original music.  In the angelic realm, Daniel is your basic duty angel who is akin to a military "grunt". But Daniel is still quite special as he is a golden angel, gifted with special magic that when grouped with two other golden angels, can temporarily be tripled in strength. As much as Michael is adamantly agnostic, Daniel is still very Catholic, having once considered becoming a priest until he realized that he would have to take a vow of chastity. His very existence now conflicts with his religious beliefs and he struggles to come to some sort of conclusion.

James Wilder: Father of Michael, Daniel and Rebecca Wilder, husband to Mary Wilder. James' background is somewhat mysterious as he has no memory beyond the night his human parents were killed in their own home.  After being cleared in their deaths, he wandered aimlessly for a short time before winding up in a Madison hospital to recover and rebuild his life, finding out that he had a brother in the process.  James also recovered some of the ancient memories of his own angelhood and how he voluntarily gave up his wings for an anonymous life on Earth although it took some time for him to accept those as anything but fantasy. After a short stint in Madison working as a university janitor, he moved back to his hometown of Roseville, Wisconsin, where he took a job at a local dairy.  While working for the dairy, he met his future wife Mary, whom he wed a short time later after a whirlwind courtship.  Once married, James turned his attention back to his parents' property in Roseville, which had sat unused since their deaths. He sold the property, gave part of the proceeds to his fully human brother Jeremy, then used the rest to buy a failing storage business and a run-down former lumber baron's mansion just outside of town both for almost nothing. Using carpentry skills learned along the way, James is slowly bringing the mansion back into liveable condition while building the storage business.  He enjoys the carpentry and woodworking so much that he has built a lot of the furniture in the home too, including a massive kitchen table and chairs that sees a lot of family time. James has never been too forthcoming about his own personal religious beliefs but accompanies his wife to church every week.

Mary Wilder: Mary is the fully human mother of Michael, Daniel and Rebecca and wife to James. Not a lot is known about her before she and James wed. She met James when he worked as a dairy truck driver and admired the way he tossed full milk cans onto the back of his truck.  As a mother, she is tough but fair and intolerant of bad behavior.  She seems unimpressed by the most beautiful or awe-inspiring of angels, and never lets her sons or daughter get away with anything. All of her children treat her with respect and adoration.  Due to the strain of carrying two male future angels, she had a hysterectomy after Daniel's birth but later on, her body was magically restored by Metatron to carry another angel child, Rebecca. Mary is the force behind the family's religious upbringing.  Funny, bright and exceedingly amazed at the development of her unusual family, Mary will continue to be the heart of the Wilder family for a long time.

Rebecca Wilder: Introduced at the end of the second in the series, youngest child and only daughter of Mary and James. Rebecca is more than twenty five years younger than her older brothers, having been conceived at the will of Metatron.  Rebecca is beautiful, stubborn, smart and very wily youngster who has her father and brothers wrapped around her little finger. Her mother Mary is another story however, and like her brothers, she shares a respect for her mother's authority and love.

Alice Fitch Wilder: Alice is Michael's wife. They met in elementary school but never really got together until they were in high school.  After getting pregnant by Michael out of wedlock, Alice moved in with the Wilder family and presently came to know that her future husband was most unusual. She gave birth to their son Dennis, who would share his father's gifts and become the most powerful angel of all, Metatron. But for now, she is Michael's wife and Dennis's mom and happy to be both but Michael's inability to be physically faithful to her is increasingly burdensome.  Alice also grew up Catholic and shares her mother-in-law Mary's dedication to the religion.

Kayeesha Warrington Wilder: Daniel's fiance and eventual wife, introduced in the 2nd book of the series.  Kayeesha is a Chicago transplant whom Daniel rescued from drowning when she was fourteen. Meeting again five years later, Daniel found her grown into a beautiful, artistic young woman who is probably of angelic blood.  Kayeesha was brought up in a non-religious atmosphere by her mother Amelia although she enjoys attending church with the Wilder family.

Dennis Wilder:  The oldest child of Michael and Alice is also the focus of the series as he becomes Metatron, the most powerful of all angels. As a child, Dennis is loving and affectionate but prone to jump off the top of the house, trying to fly. A real handful for his mother, he is always testing limits but things become especially complicated when his future angel begins to become active.  As a baby, Dennis seemed to be able to physically shake the local parish church whenever he was taken to Mass, so the family opted to leave him at home until he could control himself. Grown into a teenager in book three, he has become more like his father in attending church to appease the family but is noncommital about his thoughts on the subject.

Ezekiel Wilder:  Zeke is the second child of Michael and Alice. His older brother Dennis is at first infatuated, then mystified by this strange little red-faced squawking creature that is his first sibling.  As Zeke grows older, he comes to understand the destiny of his older brother but is in no way impressed by it. He is tough, loud and outright defiant of Dennis while also adoring the ground Dennis walks on.  Zeke goes to church with the family but often sneaks out early to go play in the cemetery behind the building.  He will be a force to be reckoned with when he is grown and gains his wings, and will not always side with his brother.

Christian and Ethan Wilder: Twin sons of Daniel and Kayeesha, introduced in the 3rd book of the series.  They are devoted to each other, opting to share a  bedroom even though they would not have to in that large house. One of their favorite activities is climbing a large oak tree behind the Heavensent's recording studio (the former carriage house and garage) to secretly watch the teenage girls in the house down the road or even to watch their own parents being intimate.

Elissa Wilder: Michael and Alice's third child, a year younger than Zeke. Introduced in the 3rd book of the series, she is a very sensitive girl who cries at the drop of a hat.  Zeke is extremely protective of her, especially when she is teased by Chris and Ethan.  As an angel back in her earlier life in the ancestral home of Void, she may have been one of Metatron's loves, which will  become a bit of a thorny issue since he is her brother on Earth.

Jamie Wilder: Jamie is the only child of James' brother Jeremy and his wife Susan. He is a few years older than Michael and Daniel but as children, they visited back and forth even though Jeremy and James were somewhat estranged from each other. Jamie attended college to become a teacher and reconnected with his cousins when he was assigned to home-tutor Alice, who was on a forced pregnancy leave from high school. Upon graduation, Jamie took a job teaching at a Madison high school until his cousins started college in Madison. To abide by university regulations, Jamie allowed Michael and Daniel to occupy a couple of spare bedrooms part time just so they would  not have to live in the dorms. This exposure probably brought out his wings, which appeared shortly after his cousins' college graduation.  Along with James and Daniel, Jamie forms the third part of a golden angel "triad" of magic, where his magic is tripled for twenty four hours after joining with the other two briefly.  As a high school teacher, Jamie is known as a nerdy but very cute math instructor, but after joining Heavensent as a fifth musician, Daniel gave him some style tips and advice that made him a head-turner at the school.  Despite the success of Heavensent, Jamie's first love will always be teaching and he is always looking for ways to go back to it.

Asmodeus/David Dietrich: Asmodeus is the overseer of Hell but spends more time on Earth finding, developing and training new angels. His human half, David was actually separated from him for many years.  David was the child of rich parents who both died fairly young and left him a fortune, but he cannot access most of the money until he is twenty one years of age. As a result, he lives sort of a vagabond life in a step-van. When Asmodeus returns to him, it is a welcome reunion and the two bond again to share a life as a blended "human angel". David lurks in the background when Asmodeus is working, enjoying his other half's freedom and activities.  However, when the opportunity to play drums in the Wilder boys' reforming rock band arises, David finally comes to the fore as his human self to offer to play drums. He not only is the band's drummer, but also its road manager and acts as a business manager as well.  When needed, Asmodeus also assists Derasthe in healing practices.

Gabriel/Rick Gannon: The mighty angel Gabriel is the unwilling angelic side of bassist Rick Gannon, a childhood friend and son of Doc Gannon, the Wilder family pediatrician. They are polar opposites in personality, with Rick being somewhat shy, usually quiet and given to long periods of pensive silence.  His actions speak louder than his words however as he is very intelligent but not interested in school. As  a result he has bounced from school to school until finally winding up in a private academy. He is still more interested in female conquest there however.  Gabriel actually emerged earlier than either of the Wilder boys angels did, catching Rick completely by surprise and nearly putting him and his family into shock. However, his father had once been friends with James and knew that there might be something very special about both his son and James' childen.  Gabriel considers himself to be separate from Rick and superior to any human. That may be why he is Earth-assigned--to gain some compassion and learn what humanity is about.  In the meantime, he has a tendency to just take over, literally locking Rick inside him.

Derasthe/Dresler Rader: Dresler is a former Shakespearean actor from a rough part of England who has made a transition to  "B" movies as a science fiction and fantasy hero.  He has had enough success in Hollywood to become somewhat of a "B list" name and is slowly working his way up to "A list" with some non-sci fi work. But as a "cult movie" actor, he faces some limitations. His angelic side Derasthe is not a separate personality but is actually him--he has never been split as Daniel and Michael were. Both the human and angel quote Shakespeare, produce movies and when in feathers, train developing young angels in angelic martial arts. In the quasi-militaristic form of organization used in the angelic hierarchy, he is a battalion commander who forms small battle groups to accomplish missions around the planet. Some of these missions are humanitarian in nature but others are brutal assassinations.  Along with Asmodeus, he also acts as a sort of paramedic for angels needing medical attention and a magical midwife for the Wilder family women giving birth to future angels.  Dresler, or "Dres" as he is called, is married to newswoman wife Cara and the couple have two future angelic children in Seth and Ariel.  He can be a courtly gentleman one minute, then turn around and be a complete pain in the ass the next, but few argue with him as Derasthe is physically larger and the most battle-tested of the current crop of angels. With humans he loves, he is always at their service.

Bret James: Illegitimate Scottish son of Dresler Rader, Bret comes along at the end of book two, where he discovers that he is not the only winged being on the planet at a Los Angeles concert.  His band "Braveheart" shares a bill with "Heavensent" and an altercation over two artistically painted pianos that look too much alike brings him into the story. Bret is a hesitant angel, refusing to learn to fly properly because he kept slamming into large objects like buildings.  He also can't drive as he seems to have the same problem with automobiles, so he walks or begs rides. With the success of  his own band "Braveheart", the need to beg rides has lessened somewhat as now he can book limos instead.  After meeting Heavensent, Bret is taken to meet his biological father, whom he resembles strongly. Bret is not a "split angel" but is complete, like his father. However, it remains to be seen if he has had a life in Void prior to being on earth. His angelic name has not yet been revealed so to everyone, he is just Bret.

Pahadron/Dr. Matthew Graves: Pahadron is the Void physician, having "wrote the book" on angelic medical care and lived one life on Earth as a human, during which he obtained a medical degree at Harvard. The only problem is that he graduated in 1838 so he has some catching up to do when he is called into service at the Wilder home to treat an especially vicious head cut on Daniel.  One of very few angels who loves clothing, Pahadron wears all silver tunics, sandals, arm bands, breastplates and anything else he can think of.  As his human self,  Dr. Matthew Graves, he is considerably more approachable and very old-fashioned in his speech and thinking.  Dr. Graves grew up in New England and practiced old fashioned horse-and-buggy country medicine for many years.  He considers Asmodeus and Derasthe to be "quacks" in angelic medicine, good for stitching up wounds and midwifery, but sees himself more akin to Doctor Gannon. Doc, in return regards Pahadron/Doctor Graves as a welcome ally in his attempts to care for the Wilders.

Leila Cristiana y Martinez:  Leila is a Cuban expatriate who runs some very profitable businesses in Southern California, living not far from Derasthe. She began life as a human in Cuba before the defeat of Batista. Her father was wealthy and had a business partner who raped her, leaving her pregnant. During this time, her wings came forward and confused, she gave up her baby girl to Asmodeus to be raised in Void when the child was born winged also.  After Lilith was taken away, Leila went to the man who had raped her and murdered him, cutting off his head. After developing more strength and magic, she was determined to get her newly impoverished family out of Cuba somehow. Using her new abilities, she found and salvaged an old Spanish wreck, finding enough gold coins in it to buy a small black-sailed yacht in Florida and sneak it into Cuban waters under magical cover. After loading up her father (her mother was dead), some cousins and other relatives, she helped them sail out toward Florida one night. The yacht was spotted and chased by Cuban gunboats but Leila mysteriously disappeared from the yacht during the chase and presently the gunboats disappeared. After they were gone, she returned and got her family to safety.  After her father's death a few years later, she moved to California where she used the rest of the gold stash to start her own business, reputedly in the style industry, where she has been very successful.  She met Derasthe early on over the skies of Los Angeles and the two formed a teaching unit for younger angels that they knew would be coming along.  She had a brief, purely physical affair with Michael which Alice found out about and as a result, her friendship with Alice has cooled off. The two women still get along but the warm relationship they had was ruined, breaking Leila's heart.

Lilith de Franco:  Lilith is Leila's daughter born from the rape. She was raised in Void and is probably the most experienced in Void life. She came to live with her mother when she became too involved with a political movement started by angels called "Fallen", even though she was only on the fringes of it. This is the same group who wants Metatron to return to Void, even if it means killing the Wilder family or anyone else who gets in their way. Lilith is not yet completely trusted although she participates in the nightly training sessions and has had Daniel's heart since the first day he saw her. But Lilith is far too independent and stubborn to consider a relationship with him, so when Kayeesha came along, Daniel moved away from Lilith and his love faded into a warm affection. However Daniel and Lilith still fight about politics, religion and anything else they can think of.

Belial:  Introduced at the end of book two, Belial is the force behind the "Fallen" movement to bring Metatron back to Void and his angels left there. Belial feels abandoned by Metatron and as an obedient and loving son of his, will do anything to bring his father back. He sees humans as mere whims of Metatron, inferior copies of angels not deserving of his affection and Michael as almost Metatron's keeper, holding him back from returning to Void.
